Big things happening in this house!

Melissa Fischer

This week was a big week in the Fischer household. And I know you’re dying to hear all about it {obvi.} so here we go!

The excitement kicked off right away Monday morning when Travis had his first day at his NEW JOB. We have officially started a new chapter! God blessed us with this new opportunity and we are very excited to see how it all works out over the next weeks and months. Change and transition is never without its hiccups and challenges, but so far things have been going pretty well for Travis during his first week at Shift.com. Plus they have a wall full of candy dispensers at the office, so how can he really complain? {#winning}

The next big thing {excitement level still to be determined} that is happening in our house is POTTY TRAINING! Yep, that’s right. We’ve stripped off the diapers and strapped on the big boy underwear and our Kingston boy is trying out the potty.

I’ll just be honest and tell you my philosophy on potty training. I have always known that I would not be a mom who pushed or fought for a potty trained child. Poop on my carpet and pee soaked clothing just aren’t my jams. In my book, those things would just lead to a lot more laundry, floor scrubbing and frustration. So, I decided from early on I would wait until Kingston showed me signs that he understood the purpose of the potty chair and had a desire to use it.

Well, about a year ago Kingston showed some desire to use the toilet. So {of course} we hopped on the internet, ordered a potty chair, and thought this is great {at barely 2 years old} our kid is about to potty train himself! Considering I am just now writing that we are potty training, it’s a logical for you to assume that did not happen.

The potty sat for a year pretty much completely unused. Our pediatrician had told us it is more typical for boys to potty train around 3 years old, so we didn’t have expectations. We just waited.

In recent weeks Kingston has been showing us a desire to use the potty, so we {I} decided to give it a whirl. This was not the first time we had tried big boy underwear. I had tried it out a few days to “test” the waters. But Tuesday I was all in, and let me tell you there were no great miracles. In fact it is up there as one of my most infuriating days of parenting.

Despite the fact that I set an alarm for every 30 minutes, Kingston peed in 4 pairs of underwear by lunch time. The final straw for me on Tuesday was when I had him sit on the toilet, he told me he didn’t have any pee, and literally 10 seconds after I let him leave the bathroom he peed on the carpet. That’s where the potty training efforts ended on Tuesday. Wednesday I took the day off because my mental and emotional states needed a recovery day.

We were back at it Thursday, and I decided to take a new approach. I let Kingston run naked {around the house} all day. And, i’m proud to report, no accidents! My theory is the underwear had given him the false security of a diaper, but being naked made him more conscious of what he was doing. We are now on day two of no accidents and I am so proud! He has been in underwear today AND telling me or just going to the bathroom himself when he has to go. I don’t think we are home free yet, but these two days have definitely been encouraging {prayers for continued success appreciated}.

On to the next big thing {finally}. Wednesday was my 27th BIRTHDAY! 27 isn’t feeling any different than 26, but if year 27 is nearly as blessed as year 26 then I cannot wait to see what happens. I had a low key day with the kids. We went on a walk, bought flowers, and baked a Trim Healthy Mama (THM) cake {I will tell you all about THM in another post}. When Trav got home we had a family pizza party and rented a movie. Travis and the kids gave me a Keurig for my birthday because my husband is sweet and has listened to my many complaints of how I do not have a time to brew a cup of coffee most mornings. Though a Keurig is never as good as his fabulous pour over coffee, it’s practical and I’m grateful for the convenience.

 So proud to "give" Mama flowers.

Thursday night I got to go out with my girl friends for a birthday celebration. We tried a restaurant in downtown Culver, and it was delicious. I am continually blessed by this group of women the Lord has brought into my life. Couldn’t have asked for a more fun evening {thanks ladies + thanks Travis for staying home with our littles}.

 Most amazing friends.

Most amazing friends.

Last couple tidbits about our week {I promise}. We got another set of paperwork for our homestudy yesterday. I was anxious to get this set because we have been told it may be the one piece we end up waiting on. It’s out of our control and will just depend on how fast the state processes and gets it back to us. So, I wanted to get it sent off ASAP. We filled it out right away and sent it out the this morning. Glad to have that done.

Lastly, Travis’s mom, Kaye, and sister, Blessing, are coming on Sunday morning. We are very excited to see them. This was a last minute trip planned to help us with some home projects. I’m looking forward to having fun and being productive!

Ok, for real, I am done now {and slightly embarrassed the majority of my post is about toddler poop + pee}. I apologize if you are mad or can’t believe you just spent that much of your day reading about such a gross topic. My life is glamorous and I am welcoming you into all the best parts. Enjoy the ride.
